Cornish Language Weekend 2014

More than 100 people went to the Cornish Language Weekend in Newquay.

Pennseythun Gernewek 2014On Friday there was a Tregedna Day where only Cornish was spoken, and it was good to see people there at many different levels who wanted to give it a try.  And for students who want to take the Language Board’s exams there was a Cramming Day where they could learn everything necessary for the exams.  In the evening the majority of participants arrived, amongst them people from as far away as Brittany, Wales, Germany, Finland, England and St Just, to eat dinner together with new and old friends before enjoying listening to Keur heb Hanow, chatting in the bar and singing much-loved Cornish songs.

On Saturday morning there were lessons and activities for developing ability in the language.  In the afternoon everyone went for a walk around Newquay before returning for a cup of tea and three launches – the children’s Topsy and Tim books, the first Tintin in Cornish and the Bora Brav CD which accompanies the course book for beginners. After dinner together again there was dancing with Hevva, brilliant singing and music from Tir ha Tavas and afterwards from a new group called Growan.  It was a great evening for everyone.  So great that some people went to bed – after singing, dancing and talking – in the middle of the night!

On Sunday (for those who were awake!) there was a religious service before breakfast and lessons again through the morning.  They were followed by lunch and then there was a performance, by the London class, of the play Bewnans Ke.

The Weekend ended too quickly, as usual, but the good news is that the Kowethas is organising the 2015 event already!
