Survey Results

For many years various sets of figures have been quoted for speakers and users of Cornish, but there has been very little information on which to base the estimates.

In order to plan effectively for the future and to measure progress, it was felt to be important that we understand as far as possible what the position is today.

For that reason the Cornish Language Partnership launched a survey in 2007 which aimed to capture everyone who knew or used some Cornish. The intention is to update figures in the future to track progress made.

The survey forms were analysed by an independent expert and the report is available to read below.

No survey of this kind can be completely comprehensive or completely accurate, relying as it does on self assessment and on recommendation and publicity to reach those who are not currently involved in organisations and listed on databases. Certainly not all those who know some Cornish are included. Nevertheless it at least gives us a better picture of the state of the language than we have had before and will help in future planning.
