Kerrier District CouncilOn 8th November 2006, Kerrier District Council approved a new policy for the implementation of the Cornish Language Strategy in the Kerrier district.
The Council approved the recommendation made by the Individual
Well Being Overview and Scrutiny Committee that: I. The inclusion of Cornish be considered for all new and replacement Council publications and signs; II. The Kerrier Cornish Language Advisory Panel be used for translations and advice for the inclusion of the language on publications and signs; and III. Promotion of the language and the associated budgetary requirements will be included in the project plan for any project applying for internal and external funding. The Scrutiny Committee recommendations resulted from work carried out by the Portfolio Holder for Democratic Renewal’s Single Issue Panel. The Panel had considered how the implementation of the Cornish Language Strategy linked to corporate objectives and priorities through the Kerrier Community Strategy and Corporate Plan. The policy offered a degree of flexibility in the amount of Cornish used while ensuring the language was promoted wherever possible. Using the Kerrier Cornish Language Advisory Panel for advice and small amounts of translation meant that there were no significant additional costs to the authority in including some Cornish in all future Council publications and signs. The policy illustrated Kerrier District Council’s commitment to fulfilling it’s obligations to promote the use of the language. It was a clear contribution to achieving objectives expressed in both the Cornish Language Strategy and Kerrier Community Strategy as the increased use of the language in the district helped preserve and develop our distinct identity and cultural heritage. |
