Cornwall Council

In November 2009 members of the Cabinet agreed a Cornish language policy for Cornwall Council.

Bilingual Road Sign

The policy, which was proposed by the Partnership, includes the extension of bilingual signage to the whole of Cornwall and ensures that Council departments will give consideration to the use of Cornish in a wide range of applications. The full policy is available to download below.

Bilingual signage in Cornwall was first promoted by Kerrier District Council and then extended to Carrick. The Council system will work in the same way as Kerrier in that it will apply to new and replacement signs, so that there is no cost implication in the bilingual policy.

This work in Kerrier was facilitated by a language Panel. MAGA has now formed a panel to carry out this function for the whole of Cornwall in response to requests from the council, building on the experience in Kerrier.

We look forward to working more closely with council departments to begin to deliver the new policy, and to more Cornish in council publications, where appropriate.
