Case Study – Fifteen

As the Cornish Language Partnership’s Translation Service takes off, some extremely high profile businesses are taking an interest in using Cornish. One high profile customer to use the Translation Service is Fifteen Cornwall, the restaurant at Watergate inspired by Jamie Oliver to train disadvantaged young people from around Cornwall to become world class chefs.

During February 2007 the restaurant offered a ‘Totally Cornish’ menu, the idea behind which was to show people the amazing quality and variety of Cornish produce and to demonstrate Cornwall’s unique food heritage. The restaurant already has a policy of sourcing at least 80% of its ingredients from Cornish producers and they find that many people eating at Fifteen Cornwall are very pleased to discover that so much of the exciting food on their plates has been grown, reared or caught in Cornwall – many previously having no idea how rich Cornwall is in fantastic produce. They decided to take this one step further and introduce the ‘Totally Cornish’ menu, which consisted of 100% Cornish produce, to show how easy it is to create fabulous food without using anything from outside of Cornwall.

Jo Davey, Fifteen Cornwall’s Marketing Manager, says, "In keeping with the theme of the unique character of Cornwall, it seemed only right that the menu should be translated into Cornish. We discovered that the Cornish Language Partnership has a very fast, convenient and cost-effective translation service which made translating the menu easy. When the translation went up on the website, we had a very positive response – it seemed to really engage the interest of visitors to the website and proves how important it is to keep Cornish heritage alive."

As with longer translation requests, the Cornish Language Partnership gave the restaurant samples from the menu translated into each of the four current forms of Cornish, so that the restaurant could then choose which form they wished to use. Unfortunately the ‘Totally Cornish’ menu is not currently on offer at the restaurant, but do keep an eye on their website for future promotions of a similar kind!
