Cornish Today

Cornish today is a living language and is recognised as such under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

A strategy for development, drawn up in response to this recognition has resulted in a funded development programme to help the language move forward.

In this section you will find the background studies and documents which have helped Cornish take a leap forward, together with information on the state of the language today. As more research is carried out and new information becomes available, it will be posted here.

  • There are a number of organisations working with Cornish or who have an interest in it. This directory is designed to help you understand what each one does or is responsible for.

  • Put simply, the written sources for Cornish span several centuries and reflect different periods in the life of the language. In reviving Cornish, spelling systems have been devised which reflect different ideas on how we should use this knowledge to take Cornish forward into the future.
