Early Years Students Take Up Cornish Challenge

At the start of November 09 MAGA was invited to both Duchy College at Stoke Climsland, near Callington, and Cornwall College in Pool to run training sessions for the colleges' Early Years students.

Over two days MAGA worked with around eighty students at the two colleges who are training to be child carers, teaching assistants and nannies, with the aim of showing them how Cornish could be integrated into their work with young children. Three resources were showcased: the Tales from Porth series of stories, Kanow Flehes action songs for children and the pre-school animation Konin ha Pryv. The students were then given an opportunity to try activities associated with the three resources, to give them practical ideas about how they could make use of these resources themselves.

The students at both colleges were very receptive to the idea of using Cornish, and as well as taking on board the suggested activities they came up with their own ideas for how to introduce Cornish into their work on a daily basis, including greeting the children in Cornish every day. The attitude of the students towards learning Cornish was most encouraging and a number of them expressed regret that they had not been given an opportunity to learn Cornish when they were at school, which led to the realisation that they themselves would be in a perfect position to change this for future generations.

The training sessions were led in both colleges by MAGA Project Support Officer, Elizabeth Stewart, with help running the different activities from Rob Reynolds and Maureen Pierce at Stoke Climsland, and Rael Harvey and Loveday Jenkin at Pool. Many thanks to them all for their time and assistance at these two valuable training days.
